Excessive ChatGPT Usage Linked to Decline in Critical Thinking and Memory, MIT Study Finds
A recent study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) suggests that the widespread use of artificial intelligence writing assistants like ChatGPT may have detrimental effects on cognitive functions such as critical thinking and memory. Contrary to popular belief, heavy reliance on ChatGPT does not contribute to increased intelligence, but rather leads to cognitive decline and memory loss.
The study, which focused on 54 subjects aged 18 to 39 from the Boston area, found that neural activity and connectivity were lower in individuals who heavily utilized AI assistance. As ChatGPT usage increased, key brain networks responsible for critical thinking and memory formation became less engaged, ultimately impacting the users’ ability to reason through complex ideas and retain information.
During the experiment, participants were asked to write several SAT essays using ChatGPT, Google’s search engine, and other tools. The results revealed that ChatGPT users produced lower-quality writing, demonstrated weaker cognitive engagement on EEG scans, and struggled to retain what they had written minutes later, with 83 percent unable to recall even a single sentence of their output.
Furthermore, the study highlighted the phenomenon of “cognitive debt,” where outsourcing mental effort to AI tools like ChatGPT inhibits learning and critical thinking. This poses a significant concern for education, as students are increasingly turning to generative artificial intelligence for assistance with academic workload and time constraints, leading to procrastination, memory issues, and a decline in academic performance.
