The Benefits of Drinking Coffee in the Morning for Health and Longevity
A recent study suggests that the time of day when people consume coffee could play a significant role in the health benefits they experience. Researchers have found that adults who drink coffee before noon may see the greatest reductions in early mortality from any cause, as well as from cardiovascular disease. This supports the overall and cardiovascular health of individuals.
According to the study, consuming around three cups of coffee a day could be linked to an additional 1.84 years of life expectancy for the average person, with regular consumption also associated with increased healthspan – the time spent living without serious disease.
The research also suggests that coffee consumption can have positive effects on key health indicators. For example, a study out of Korea found that coffee may have benefits for blood glucose levels and insulin resistance. Drinking up to one cup of black coffee daily was significantly associated with better glucose metabolism.
Optimal consumption guidelines suggest that 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day can offer maximum benefits, as long as caffeine intake stays within the recommended daily limit of 400 mg. Coffee with sugar or cream, however, did not show clear benefits in terms of health outcomes.
Additionally, a large observational study of over 47,000 women found a connection between coffee consumption and healthy aging. Participants who drank two to three cups of coffee each day had a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and experiencing early mortality compared to those who did not consume coffee.
It’s important to note that the FDA recommends limiting caffeine intake to 400 mg per day and being aware of hidden caffeine in various food, drinks, and medications.
The study, which was featured in the Ageing Research Reviews journal and led by neuroscientist Rodrigo Cunha, highlights the potential benefits of moderate coffee consumption in counteracting biological mechanisms that typically decline with age. Cunha emphasizes that coffee’s role in healthy aging is often overlooked by traditional clinical recommendations.
