Aging Adults See Increase in Cannabis Use, Health Risks

In a recent analysis of national survey data, researchers have found a significant rise in cannabis use among aging adults, leading to potential health risks. The study, published in the medical journal JAMA, revealed that current cannabis use among adults aged 65 and older has increased to 7% of respondents in 2023 from 4.8% in 2021.

According to researchers at NYU and UC San Diego, the increase in cannabis use among older adults is a cause for concern, as it may lead to long-term health impacts. The findings underscore the importance of cautious consumption, especially among this age group, to mitigate potential health risks.

Among the older veterans seeking care at V.A. health facilities, over 10% reported cannabis use within the past month. Shockingly, 36% of these individuals met the criteria for mild, moderate, or severe cannabis use disorder, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

These results highlight the need for further research into the risks associated with cannabis use among aging adults and the importance of tailored interventions to address potential health concerns.
