Country Singer Releases New Song ‘Sin’ to Support HIV-Positive LGBTQ Community
Country music singer David Michael Hawkins has dropped a new song — “SIN” — because he wants people to know they are not alone. The singer, who has come out as gay and is living with HIV, shares his personal journey through his music.
“I don’t expect terrestrial country radio to pick me or play this song. It’s not meant for them,” says David Michael Hawkins. “The song is meant for queer people who hear themselves in the lyrics.”
In a song released during Pride month and ahead of HIV testing day on June 27, the Nashville-based artist discusses his own experiences with HIV. Country music has historically not been a safe space for LGBTQ individuals, especially those living with HIV. However, David Michael Hawkins is unapologetically sharing his story through his music.
On June 20, the singer-songwriter from Nashville released “Sin,” a raw and defiant country ballad that serves as a form of personal reckoning. Describing himself as “sober, married, and thriving,” Hawkins speaks at HIV conferences, performs at Pride events globally, and writes country music that delves into the complexities of life.
In a recent interview, Hawkins talked about turning 40 in August and marrying the love of his life. He is using his platform in the country music industry to be open about his sexuality and HIV status, breaking barriers for LGBTQ representation in the genre.
David Michael Hawkins is not the only country artist making waves in the LGBTQ community. Fellow singer-songwriter Cameron Hawthorn surprised fans with a heartwarming music video for “Dancing in the Living Room,” featuring diverse couples swaying to the music, showcasing authenticity and inclusivity in the industry.
With artists like Hawkins and Hawthorn paving the way, the country music scene is slowly becoming more welcoming and supportive of LGBTQ individuals. As the first openly gay and openly HIV-positive entertainer in the country music industry, David Michael Hawkins is using his platform to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and spread awareness and acceptance through his music.
