Indonesian Volcano Eruption Grounds Dozens of Flights
Dozens of flights to and from Indonesia’s resort island of Bali have been cancelled after a volcano shot hot ash more than six miles into the sky, creating clouds that forced airlines to ground their flights.
According to authorities and the island’s airport, at least two dozen flights were cancelled on Wednesday following the eruption of the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in the archipelago’s east, leaving travelers stranded at airports.
International airlines, including Singapore Airlines, had to cancel flights from Changi Airport to Bali as the ongoing volcanic activity disrupted air travel. Tourists reported being stuck at Bali’s airport since Tuesday after their flights were unexpectedly canceled.
The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki unleashed a massive cloud of hot ash, reaching a towering 6.8 miles-high cloud in the air, causing travel chaos in the region. The airport in Maumere in East Nusa Tenggara province was also closed due to the volcanic eruption.
