EU Report Suggests Israel May Be Violating Human Rights Agreement
A recent report from the European Union’s diplomatic corps has raised concerns that Israel’s actions in Gaza could be in violation of its agreement with the EU.
The European External Action Service (EEAS) has indicated that independent international assessments suggest Israel may be breaching its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. This news comes as a majority of EU states have supported a review to determine whether Israel’s military activities in Gaza have contravened the human rights commitments outlined in the agreement.
The EU is set to discuss the findings of the report prepared by High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, highlighting potential human rights violations by Israel, which could be seen as undermining the spirit of the Association Agreement between the two parties.
Review of EU-Israel Association Agreement
Israel’s compliance with human rights and democratic principles is a crucial aspect of the bilateral association agreement with the EU. The European Commission, supported by 17 member states, initiated a long-overdue review in May 2025 to investigate whether Israel has failed to uphold its obligations under Article 2 of the agreement, particularly in terms of respecting human rights and democratic values.
Human rights organizations and trade unions have urged the EU to ensure a thorough review of Israel’s adherence to the terms of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights standards in the region.
