Italian Prosecutors Investigate the Sinking of the $40M Superyacht Bayesian

Italian and British investigators are still trying to find out what caused the sinking of the $40 million superyacht — which its makers had deemed “unsinkable” — during a storm 10 months ago. The luxury yacht, known as the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily last year, resulting in the tragic death of U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch and others onboard.

The yacht, originally owned by Dutch real estate developer John Groenewoud, was purchased for £30 million ($39 million) when it was first built. Despite being marketed as unsinkable, tragedy struck when the superyacht capsized during a storm, leading to the loss of seven lives.

Ten months after the maritime disaster, salvage crews managed to lift the sunken superyacht 50 meters (164 feet) from the seabed. The resurfacing of the 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian has led to renewed investigations into the causes of the accident and the events that led to its tragic sinking.

Marine Salvage Crews Recover the Sunken Superyacht

Specialist divers surveying the wreckage of the yacht have requested heightened measures to uncover clues that may shed light on the mystery disaster. The recovery of the superyacht from the Mediterranean Sea marks a crucial step in the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident and the factors that contributed to the shipwreck.

As the salvage teams prepare to haul the wreckage ashore for further examination, the emergence of the Bayesian from the seabed has reignited interest in the maritime incident that claimed seven lives, including that of prominent businessman Mike Lynch. Stay tuned for updates as the investigation into the sinking of the $40 million superyacht continues.
